Hastings Intermediate School - Hastings - 2 kW
In the beginning was an organic garden!
At Hastings Intermediate our environmental journey really began with the creation of an organic garden. The garden was situated within the Technology area and fed the 'hungry hordes' through the Food Technology programme.
The garden produced so much that we had to solve the problem of storage. The students knew they wanted to address the problem in an environmentally friendly way and so they embarked on an inquiry which culminated in the building of a pataka and the added bonus of winning an IPENZ award!
In 2002, Hastings Intermediate became a pilot Enviro-School in Hawkes Bay. In 2005, we applied for a Bronze Award and were awarded a silver! Along the way, we acquired an Ede Award and a Highly Commended award from the Hawkes Bay Regional Council. In 2007, our Silver award was affirmed.
Even before the garden, we were committed to paper and then other kinds of recycling, thanks to the passion of a staff member who was ahead of her time! This continues to be the mainstay of our programme.
In addition, we have been involved in community projects such as a wetland reclamation and native tree planting in a variety of locations. Our Green Team continues to look for ways to act in, about and for the environment.
The Schoolgen project is a way for our students to identify with yet another purposeful and practical way that individuals really CAN make a difference and that we CAN reduce our collective global footprint. We're proud to be able to show that we really do take the concept of kaitiakitanga seriously enough to make a stand for the environment with the support of Genesis Energy.
