Wanganui Intermediate

Wanganui Intermediate Logo

Schoolgen was a great prize for this school's ambitious Enviro-Group. They put heaps of energy into the application and were out to impress the Genesis Energy team that visited. We are delighted to join the schools that are reducing our carbon footprint in this sustainable way.

This year our students are building on previous Enviro-Groups achievements. We have a regular WISE words feature in the Wanganui Chronicle providing columns on everything from energy saving to whales. We have joined a healthy eating scheme to plant heritage fruit trees in the school grounds and we fundraise to sponsor birds at the Bushy Park kiwi creche.

We already have a huge recycling centre made from a professionally converted shipping container. Classes annually update their Enviro-Pledges and every week we compete for the Enviro-Shield.

In 2001 we signed an MOU with DoC to help with the Castlecliff coastal reserve where we regularly plant pingao. Further inland we have been planting trees in a kahikatea forest remnant. We have seedlings of some of the oldest trees growing at school.

Each winter we run an energy saving campaign and classes take care of areas that they choose.

Even before Wanganui Intermediate became an Enviro-School the school community had created a well planted environment that features a pond with waterfall and many native trees.
Although we bound the main street of town our school plantings often host tui and bellbird. White doves croon and fly between their dove cote and nesting boxes. With these symbols of peace about our school looks forward to a more sustainable future.
