Taupo-nui-a-Tia College has a commitment to education for sustainability through a number of initiatives within the school and community. The school recently gained the Enviroschools Bronze award and is now aiming for the next level. Our student led envirogroup have initiated a number of environmental projects this year, including a revamping of the school paper recycling scheme and organising a highly successful ”kiwiana day“ raising over $1300 for the BNZ Save the Kiwi Trust. Students from the college have participated in the Untouched World Kiwi Forever Programme for the past three years with individual students selected to attend the Blumine Island project every year. This year we were fortunate to have students also attend the Sir Peter Blake National Youth Forum and the Enviroschools National Youth Jam and associated regional events. We are also very excited about one of our senior student leaders gaining a Bayer Boost Scholarship this summer which will allow her to undergo environmental research locally.

Staff have made a commitment to sustainability by their support of the paper recycling scheme and “Paper for Trees” initiative. Teachers have regularly attended, participated and facilitated courses and conferences on Education for Sustainability and environmental concerns. Education for Sustainability is embedded across the curriculum with different units of work in Science, Social Sciences, Technology, English and Art. Recently more of our students were involved with the rebranding of the recycle centre at the local landfill, designing a new logo and name.

The college sees the Schoolgen project as an extension of the learning opportunities offered to our students. Through the study of solar energy and power generation the students are exposed to real time data that is authentic and relevant to them. The panels are a visual reminder of the need for all individuals to make a difference for the environment.
