Pakuranga College
Pakuranga College has a long tradition of commitment to thorough learning and to excellence in every sphere. It is a highly regarded co-educational secondary school with a roll of approximately 2100.
Pakuranga College is committed to preparing its students for a knowledge age society where they are equipped to use their knowledge to solve problems. Some of the issues in the future that they will need to address include the sustainability of the planet and looking after energy needs without depleting the earth's natural resources.
In support of this concept Pakuranga College is very proud to be participating in Genesis Energy's Schoolgen programme.
The solar panels were installed on the English block roof in June 2007 and are visible from Pakuranga Highway. The Schoolgen display wall has been set up in the Jill Sweeney Science block to provide ongoing information about levels of electricity generation from the solar panels. Students will be able to use the Schoolgen website to gather information for research and will be able to share this data with students in other schools.
At Pakuranga College all students learn about renewable energy sources when they are in year 9 and are fortunate to have a real life example at the school. The school also has an active enviro group that is committed to spreading the word to students and staff about sustainability and energy conservation.
On June 8 2010 we celebrate 3 years of having solar panels at the school. Over those 3 years our solar panels have generated a total of 4,673 kWh and saved 1.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide form being released into the atmosphere.
