Clifton Terrace Model School
Clifton Terrace Model School (CTMS) is a small primary school (approximate 2009 roll = 70 for years 0-8) located in Wellington, close to the central business district. The school has been focused on learning about the environment, including things that we can do to help sustain the environment. For example, CTMS is part of the Enviroschool Programme (currently at Bronze Level); also, we recycle, and we compost.
Plants are integral to our environment, so we have planted native species and developed a small vegetable garden in our school grounds. Even our three classrooms - Kauri, Kowhai, and Kahikatea - are named after plants. Plants convert the power of the sun through an amazing process called photosynthesis. If the plants can harness the sun's clean, sustainable power, then why shouldn't we humans try to do something similar?
We are very excited about being selected into the Schoolgen Programme. The installation of the solar panels fits with our teaching and living aims. It stresses the importance of the sun to Earth, and it provides a visible starting point, as well as a future reminder, for our focus on understanding energy production and usage. Certainly, the Schoolgen Programme offers many learning opportunities, and we are looking forward to learning heaps. We also are looking forward to seeing how power generation at CTMS compares with power generation at other schools.
