Napier Intermediate School (NIS) has 400 students and is located in Napier in the beautiful Hawke's Bay. Following a $4 million school up grade, and having had to learn in a building site for three years, we are now in completed buildings and developing our landscaping. This includes finding more efficient ways of recycling in our school environment and exploring how we can make a difference in our community. We value our local environment. With the beautiful Marine Parade on our doorstep we feel very strongly about keeping our sea shore healthy for future generations.

In 2008 a keen group of students who felt that we had more to do to improve the efficiency of our school applied to Genesis Energy for solar panels. These focussed students and two teachers started the ball rolling and Napier Intermediate became a Schoolgen school. Our goal is to improve our understanding and use of sustainable practices in all areas. NIS students are keen to create greater awareness of sustainability issues within our local community as well. Schoolgen is helping us achieve our goal by providing us with solar panels which will allow students the opportunity to experience first hand sustainable and renewable energy technologies in action and working with us to develop our curriculum.
In 2013 NIS have developed a lead team that is aiming to achieve the Schoolgen Bronze award. In conjunction with the Enviro-Team students are responsible for becoming experts in selected areas and sharing the learning with others across the school. Student voice will be fundamental to the success of the programme in 2013 and with these students progress is guaranteed!
