Mercury Bay Area School - Whitianga - 2 kw

Mercury Bay Area School, located on the stunning Coromandel Peninsula, is taking solar energy and energy efficiency education seriously! This November will the fourth anniversary of our solar panel installation.

Our fabulous Schoolgen Lead Team (the 2012 team pictured below) is leading the way with some practical initiatives that will ensure that our school and the wider community is well educated about solar energy efficiency

These boys and girls are the champions of solar energy education and energy efficiency in our school. They are dedicated and passionate about the bigger global issues surrounding energy efficiency and sustainability

Some of the Schoolgen lead team initiative include...

Development and implementation of School-wide energy efficiency programme

This involves weekly, random spot checks of all classrooms by Schoolgen team members. Those classrooms demonstrating energy efficiency are awarded a certificate to display in their window. Special recognition is given to classes deemed to be most energy efficient at the end of each term.

Energy monitors in every classroom.

Every classroom in years 1-8 has a designated energy monitor or monitors, whose job it is to ensure that classrooms are energy efficient at all times. In addition, weekly Schoolgen reports are displayed in the library so they are available for the entire school to see.

Fortnightly updates at assembly

Each fortnight, the lead team presents a question relating to solar energy to the assembly or provides information and tips to students which assist their energy efficiency and solar energy learning.

MBAS Energy Efficient House Design Competition 2012!

In term three, all students from year one to six have been learning about solar energy and energy efficiency. Children then put their learning into practise by planning, designing and building a model of their very own energy efficient house or room.

Overall winners, Kalani and Anya represented MBAS in the annual national energy efficient house design competition run by the Schoolgen team at Genesis Energy with a five minute video outlining their learning. We wish them luck!
