May Road School has a strong commitment to Environmental Education and environmentally sustainable practices. As a Human Rights in Education School we foster cultural inclusiveness and respect for each other and our environment. We have developed strong relationships with whānau and community, which our students understand is a vital component in promoting awareness of environmental and conservation issues. As part of this approach we aim to develop more sustainable use of resources in our school community.
In 2012 May Road School began working with Schoolgen and our buddy school Tirimoana School. This relationship developed over two years and in 2013 the work of the students led to the school being gifted photovoltaic solar panels, which were installed in March 2014. This acknowledgement by Genesis Energy has demonstrated in a very real way that our students can really “make a difference” to their world.
Principal Lynda Stuart says, “As a school we are very grateful for the support from Genesis Energy. One of our school goals is that ‘all students and staff are aware that they have the ability to make a positive difference to our world’. It is through initiatives like this that this goal is enacted.”
