Media Release: Schoolgen comes to Wellington

Bringing sunshine to the capital

Genesis Energy is launching Schoolgen, the programme that teaches students about renewable energy and combating climate change, at Clifton Terrace Model School in Wellington today.

The Minister for the Environment, Hon. Nick Smith will be attending the launch, accompanied by Genesis Energy Chairman Brian Corban CNZM, QSO and Chief Executive Albert Brantley.

Through Schoolgen, 30 schools across the North Island have been selected to have a 2 kilowatt photovoltaic system installed on the roof of a school building by Genesis Energy. Schools are selected for the programme on the basis of a demonstrated commitment to environmental sustainability.

‘We are very pleased to be launching Schoolgen in the capital today to further confirm Genesis Energy’s commitment to renewable energy,’ says Genesis Energy Chief Executive Albert Brantley.

‘We recognise that the future of energy in New Zealand cannot only be limited to large-scale projects. A smaller initiative like Schoolgen makes a contribution to the country’s future, particularly because it teaches environmental responsibility and energy awareness to young people,’ says Mr Brantley.

Schools do not have to have the solar panels installed to take advantage of what Schoolgen has to offer.

Comprehensive teaching resources developed to link with the New Zealand curriculum, live generation data from the panels of participating schools and a wealth of information about renewable energy and climate change are freely available to all visitors to the Schoolgen website.

Genesis Energy warmly welcomes the nine schools in the greater Wellington Region which have been selected to take part in Schoolgen, including Douglas Park School (Masterton), Muritai School (Lower Hutt), Eastern Hutt School (Lower Hutt), Paremata School (Paremata), Raphael House (Rudolph Steiner School, Upper Hutt), Clifton Terrace Model School (Wellington City), Paraparaumu College (Paraparaumu), Plateau School (Upper Hutt), and Wadestown School (Wellington City).
