Schoolgen
Hello
Welcome to the fourth Schoolgen newsletter!
Schoolgen is a programme developed by
Genesis Energy to bring the concepts of solar energy, sustainability and environmental awareness to life for children across New Zealand.

WE'VE GOT SOME EXCITING DEVELOPMENTS TO SHARE WITH YOU!
Our new Schoolgen website is live and we’d love for you to take some time and explore it. The Schoolgen Teacher Resources have been further developed into a world class resource for teaching students about energy, climate change and renewable energy - and they’re yours to use for free. Schoolgen is coming to Wellington early next year so we’re calling for registrations of interest from Monday 28th July from schools in the greater Wellington Region who would like to be considered to have solar panels installed. Also, you can learn more about how Genesis Energy is helping young people to learn about energy generation and climate change and how it could work in your school.

Check us out!
OUR NEW WEBSITE IS NOW LIVE!

www.schoolgen.co.nz

We've given the Schoolgen website a whole new look - we've improved accessibility, considerably updated our library of detailed teaching resources and improved the overall functionality of the site.
Some of the highlights you can expect to see when you visit the site are:

The new look
After a review of the Schoolgen website and communication elements at the end of 2007 we decided to change the way we talk to students, teachers and other people interested in Schoolgen. We’ve made the site flexible enough to respond to the different needs of Schoolgen’s audiences, including primary and secondary school students, their teachers and parents, through use of visuals, ‘pop-up’ links, and menu options.

The schools map
Visitors can click on a region of New Zealand and through a Google map, view all the Schoolgen schools in that area. Each school marker displays the name of the school, how long they have been generating electricity through Schoolgen, the current weather and a link to that school’s website.

Technical highlights
A lot of the data relating to Schoolgen is technical in nature, be it solar electricity data from participating schools or how the current weather is affecting the power output from the solar panels.

The new website allows visitors to create charts to compare generation data from up to three schools, so students can analyse the effects of weather conditions in different regions. As well as comparing generation output between regions, students are able to access real time weather data from NIWA to understand the effects that weather has on electricity generation from the solar panels.

We’ve also enhanced the ‘search’ function on the website, so visitors will be able to quickly find information which matches their enquiry.

Teacher resources
Because there are so many teacher resources now available on the Schoolgen website, we have provided a searchable Teacher’s Resource Table to make it easy to find the resource that you are looking for. The table provides an overview of all the Schoolgen learning resources, a brief summary of their content and the curriculum links and levels.

Other features on the website which support the new teaching resources are:
  • An interactive glossary of key terms
  • Comprehensive information on solar energy
  • Email support available from the Schoolgen team for any further  questions.

SCHOOLGEN TEACHER RESOURCES

As well as updating our website, we have been busy creating more teacher resources that link with the new New Zealand curriculum.

The resources cover a wide range of learning areas, including the Social Sciences, Science (Environmental Education and Physics), English, Mathematics (Statistics), and Technology.

The following resources are new to the programme:
  • Eleven new teacher-led activities (eight activities focusing on Energy Efficiency and three activities focusing on Solar Energy)
  • Six student fact sheets (four fact sheets on Solar Energy and two fact sheets on Energy Efficiency)
  • Eight student inquiry tools (one student inquiry tool per level for each subject)
  • A Teacher Resource Manual for teachers.
The new solar energy resources are available now on the new Schoolgen website, however the energy efficiency resources will not be available on the website until August.

Teacher-led Activities

Collecting the light to see at night
These activities have been written to provide assistance to teachers in the form of ready-made lesson plans relating to Schoolgen.

Most of the teacher-led activities are supported by graphic organisers, graphs, and worksheets to support students in their learning. Activity sheets have been designed to be photocopied. Teachers can also “cut and paste” relevant sections from the activity sheets to alter the activities to suit individual class requirements.

Teacher fact sheets
The fact sheets provide teachers with basic background information about the topics covered in the Schoolgen learning resources. The sheet identifies key concepts and provides examples where necessary. Teachers can use this background information to check their understanding of the subject areas and to help identify and correct any misconceptions.

Student fact sheets and inquiries
Four solar energy student fact sheets and two energy efficiency student fact sheets, appropriate for different age groups have been written. These fact sheets are linked to a corresponding student inquiry.

The student inquiries are designed to support inquiry-based learning. Each student inquiry is based on several key questions or inquiries that students explore through research.

Most of the inquiries build on knowledge introduced in the teacher-led activities. The student inquiries and their corresponding fact sheets have been designed for students from Level 2 to Level 8.

I’M RUNNING THIS SCHOOL

Are you a school in the greater Wellington Region? Would you like solar panels on your roof?

After 16 successful installations across greater Auckland and Hamilton City, Schoolgen is coming to the greater Wellington Region. Registrations of interest can be made via the Schoolgen website from Monday 28th July until Friday 15 August. Installations will take place in early 2009.

GIVING IT ALL OUR ENERGY

Genesis Energy has developed two other programmes for children and young people to engage their thinking about the challenges of sustainable energy generation and how we can work together against climate change.
ElectroCity is an online interactive game designed to give players a taste of the balancing act that goes into running a successful, yet sustainable city. It is aimed at students in years 7-9 but anyone can play. Players have to make choices about energy generation, tourism ventures and tax rates – with all of these factors having effects on the happiness of your town’s population and on its balance sheet at the end of the game! Like Schoolgen, ElectroCity is accompanied by educational resources that are available on the website. Visit electrocity.co.nz and declare yourself Mayor!

Tree People is designed to capture the imagination of children and the interest of adults by giving them a new way to think about climate change. Tree People is a website where people "adopt" a native tree and grow it by making pledges to change their behavior in environmentally-aware ways. The more pledges people make, the more their tree grows. Visit treepeople.co.nz to adopt your tree.
