Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficiency

Using energy efficiently not only saves money, but also benefits the entire country by reducing demand for energy. If we don't consume as much energy, we don't need to generate as much and therefore we conserve our precious natural resources.

Energy efficiency practices also create health and social benefits as improved insulation levels, more efficient heating and other efficiency measures create warmer, drier and healthier homes and schools.

This section provides some background information on energy efficiency that students will find useful in completing their Schoolgen classroom activities and their own investigations into sustainable energy use.

Three Student Factsheets on energy efficiency have been written to support the Student Inquiry Tools but are also a useful source of information on their own.

If you can't find the information that you are after please email the Schoolgen Team at info@schoolgen.co.nz and we will get back to you with an answer!

Check out the energy efficiency tips that can be used at home, work or school to save energy. We have also provided recommendations from a real energy assessment undertaken by Genesis Energy at Thorndon Primary School in Wellington so you can see how easy it is to make a positive change regarding the energy used in a school.

Why don't you also check out Genesis Energy's Tree People. It's a website created by Genesis Energy for New Zealanders of all ages who want to help the environment. It's different because it reveals how small lifestyle changes can have an impact on the real world.

Or you can test your knowledge by playing Genesis Energy's ElectroCity, which is an online game that has been developed specifically for teachers and students between Years 7 and 9. Students build and manage their own virtual towns and cities, making important decisions and learning about energy generation, environmental management and many more practical and relevant concepts.
